Losing Weight with Ice Cream Sandwiches

A daily portion controlled treat can help avoid feelings of deprivation and make it easier to eat healthily for the long term.

Okay – so I will admit that the title of this blog post is somewhat misleading.  Eating a bunch of ice cream sandwiches is NOT going to help you lose weight.  However, I do have one every day, and I firmly believe it’s helping me lose weight and stay on track with my healthy eating plan.  But more on that in a minute…

First, this marks week two of my rededicating my efforts to healthy living and weight loss, and Friday was my second weekly weigh in.  My weight this week: 253.1 pounds.  That continues my losing trend, and is a loss of 1.1 pounds from last week.  That’s now 5.5 pounds I’ve lost since restarting this journey earlier this month, and about 62 pounds down from what I estimate to be my highest weight sometime in 2010.

If I’m being honest, I was a little disappointed about my loss this week.  I upped my exercise over last week, stayed strong with my diet, and generally did well.  I was hoping for a bigger loss.  But I remember Read more…


Weekly Weigh In #1: Defeating Cake with a Pencil

Here we go…  Friday was my first weekly weigh in.  I have to say, this past week since seeing my nutritionist, it felt really good to be back on track with healthy eating. Using easy guidelines to eat healthily bets counting calories on an iPhone app any day (those pure calorie count apps always led me to eat a fast food meal, fit it in my calories, and then go hungry for much of the day).  My weight yesterday morning…  254.2!!!!!  That’s 4.4 pounds down from my initial weight of 258.6 last week!

Can you defeat temptation with something as simple as a pencil? You bet.

Finding Inspiration

One important piece of my weight loss journey, that I must admit has fallen by the wayside in recent months, is finding some inspiration that I can, in fact, do this.  The best way to prove to myself that I can lose this weight and live a healthy life, is to look at people who have already walked this path.  Reading other blogs is a great way to stay on track, and watching the Today Show’s weekly “Joy Fit Club” where people have lost more than 100 pounds is also great inspiration.  My favorite way to do that this summer is by watching Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition on ABC.

If you haven’t seen this show before, Chris Powell, my future husband a trainer with more compassion and caring than anyone I have ever seen, takes someone who is morbidly obese, and transforms their mind and body over a full year.  Chris, in addition to being ridiculously good looking, has an absolute heart of gold and infectious spirit.  Yes, I have a bit of a crush, and I was devastated to learn he is married with children.  Sigh…oh well.

Back to the Nutritionist, Food Truck Temptations, and Low Cal Treats

Today I went for a long walk in Piedmont Park, Atlanta’s answer to Central Park (it was even designed by the same guy).  Little did I know when I rolled in looking to get my healthy on, that today, Piedmont Park was hosting the Atlanta Food Truck Festival!  The smells of all the amazing ethnic, and not so ethnic, treats, reminded me that a) I was making the right choice by being there to walk, and b) temptations are truly everywhere, so I’d better put my nose down and do this thing regardless!  How’s that for a start to a healthy weekend?

Last weekend, I returned to my absolute favorite coffee shop in all the world that was really a home base for me during the reconstruction of my life that began in the summer of 2010, and I recommitted to recapturing that energy and enthusiasm from the summer of 2010, as I get back on track to reclaim a healthier lifestyle, and while I’ve maintained most of my weight loss, to continue my quest of approaching what would be a more healthy everyday weight for me.  This past Thursday, I took another step towards reclaiming that energy and enthusiasm by returning to my absolute favorite nutritionist in all the world, and getting a fresh plan for my nutrition and system for accountability.

As I walked into her office, I was struck by how little had changed there, yet how different everything was.  I remember sitting in the lobby when I first visited her on my thirtieth birthday almost three years ago.  I was embarrassed by my weight, by my inability to control this part of my life, and I generally felt uncomfortable in my own skin sitting waiting to meet her.  This time around, Read more…

The Summer of 1969? I’ll take 2010 (and now 2012), thanks…

Okay…  Well… Where do I start.  I’m sitting here as we speak at my absolute favorite coffee shop in all of the world.  And for the first time in a year, almost exactly, I’m blogging.  In a really amazingly awesome way, I feel like I’ve time warped back to the summer of 2010.  Some people look back on the summer of ’69 as extraordinary and transformative.  Well, not to rub it in to the baby boomers, but I wasn’t born then.  I was ten years away from being even a glimmer in my parents’ eyes.  For me, the summer of 2010 was, and will always be, the summer that changed everything.  It was my Woodstock, my moon landing, and yes, my Stonewall riots, all rolled into one.
